BBR’s Week 2 Top 25

Couple of good games this weekend mixed the top 25 up a little with the Pac10 and the MAC doing most of the mixing. The MAC and the WAC came real close to pulling upsets over the Big 10 and the Pac 10. The biggest losers this week Notre Dame and the Big 10.

Being off Kentucky didn’t pick up any votes in the AP which doesn’t mean anything since the AP has never matched what fans manage to see every weekend with what writers don’t watch.

In the Coaches poll Kentucky got 9 votes which would rank us 6th in the SEC and 38th in the nation.

USA Today Poll

USA Today has released there preseason top 25. The Cats got 9 votes and are ranked 42 in the nation.

What shouldn’t surprise anyone is that there are no Big East teams ranked to start the season. Cincinnati, Pittsburg, W. Va, Rutgers and S. Florida all got votes. Its hard to see anyone besides Cincinnati or W. Virginia making a climb in to the top 25 due to the strength of their non-conference schedules.

The MWC and the WAC have four teams in the top 25 and a fifth Nevada got a few votes. Its easier to see some of them staying in the top 25 since they have teams that stand a fair chance of winning games against the BCS teams on their non-conference schedules.

Sims and Ridge commit to Cats

David Sims becomes the second player to commit to Kentucky since the win on Sunday.Projected to play running back for the Wildcats, Sims also held offers from Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Michigan, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Oregon, Colorado and South Carolina, among many others.

ESPN’s Billy Tucker said of the pledge, “Building off last year’s onfield success and exposure, the Wildcats are quietly putting together an impressive class as Sims is their 19th commitment and sixth positional prospect rated in the top-30 nationally.”
“While Sims has raw arm strength and good zip on the football, we project this productive dual-threat quarterback is being more recruited as an athlete with Morgan Newton (Carmel, Ind.) and Ryan Mossakowski (Frisco, Texas/Centennial) already on board. Either way, he will bring great versatility to the roster and is a great out-of-state pickup for Kentucky.”
“The second rated athlete in South Carolina this year is very a dynamic prospect with a ton of physical talent and legitimately has a chance to develop on either side of the ball in Lexington. Defensively, he is very instinctive as a high-point safety and has good range and ball skills. He could get a look at tailback on offense with his strong, compact body structure needed to earn YAC, quickness to make defenders miss through the hole, and great acceleration when he reaches the second level.”

Earlier in the week Kentucky recieved a commitment from Ridge Wilson, a 6-foot-3 linebacker from Central (Louisville, Ky.), has agreed to accept a Class 2009 scholarship offer from Kentucky.

He said, “I had been thinking about UK for a while, and that game (vs. Louisville) kind of made me decide that now may be the right time to go ahead and make my decision,” the Courier-Journal reports.

The Wildcats edged Louisville, Arkansas and Indiana for Wilson.
Kentucky now has 19 commitments.

Top 25 out

The top 25 rankings are out now. South Carolina became the 6th SEC team in the top 25 this year after replacing Tennessee who lost to UCLA Monday. The AP voters game Kentucky 5 votes ranking them 38th and the USA voters gave the Cats 20 votes ranking them 34th. USC replaced Georgia who dropped to 2nd. Illinois is the only ranked team with a loss

BCS Busters

Utah survived 25-23 over Michigan to remain in contention as a BCS Buster. They put up 313 yards in the first half and held on to beat Michigan. Utah dual purpose kicker Louie Sakoda had field goals of 28, 43, 41 and 53 and punted six times for 283 yds.

East Carolina defeated Virginia Tech 27-22 when T.J. Lee returned his own blocked punt 27 yards for a touchdown with 1:52 left.

Boise St had no problem in beating Idaho St 49-7. Boise St had 352 yds passing and 230 yds rushing in their blow out. They could have scored in the last few seconds but did the right thing.

BYU beat Northern Iowa 41-17. Max Hall threw for 486 yards and two touchdowns and Dennis Pitta had a career-best 213 receiving yards for the Cougars as they extended the longest winning streak in the nation to 11.

TCU had no problem in beating New Mexico 26-3. Quarterback Andy Dalton ran for two touchdowns as TCU took advantage of New Mexico’s first-half mistakes and went on to a 26-3 win Saturday in the season-opener for both teams.

After a slow first half Fresno St dominated the second half with 166 yds rushing by Ryan Mathews. The final score was Fresno St 24 Rutgers 7. Next up Fresno St has on Wisconson on saturday at Fresno.

Crawford makes Lakers

Former Wildcat Joe Crawford made the Lakers according to the Lakers website.

Crawford was selected by the Lakers with the 58th pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, Crawford, a 22 year-old native of Detroit, Michigan, played four seasons at the University of Kentucky, averaging 11.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 127 games (76 starts).

As a senior, Crawford ranked fourth in the SEC in scoring with a team-high 17.9 points per game, scoring 20-plus points 13 times while topping 30 points on three occasions.

Is it only me or did it cross your mind how good Joe could have been if he had Coach Billy as a coach for 4 years.
