Supplemental draft pool features three top candidates

The NFL’s supplemental draft will take place July 16, and three players who have a chance of being selected are Kentucky DL Jeremy Jarmon, Florida State WR Corey Surrency and Central Michigan OT Joe McMahon.

Here’s how the supplemental draft works. Teams make bids to the league for players in the supplemental draft pool. However, any team that makes a pick in the supplemental draft will forfeit a corresponding selection in the following year’s draft. For example, if a team were to win the rights to Jarmon with a fourth-round bid, it would forfeit a fourth-round pick in the 2010 draft.

Jarmon is the most likely of the three players to be drafted, and he worked out at Kentucky on July 9. He also participated at the Kentucky Pro Day before the draft, measuring in at 6-foot-3 and 280 pounds with a 4.76-second time in the 40-yard dash.

Surrency, a big receiver with good hands, played only one season at FSU and caught 12 passes for 237 yards and four touchdowns. He’ll work out in Tallahassee on June 30.

Prior to his time at FSU, Surrency played at El Camino Junior College in Los Angeles. Surrency, who’s originally from Miami and played at Southridge High School, was heavily recruited by LSU, California, Oregon State and Oregon, among others.

A former junior-college player, McMahon transferred to Iowa State but never played there before ending up at Central Michigan. McMahon was a two-time Golden Gloves champion in boxing, and his high school teams in Chicago won state championships in football and rugby.

The supplemental draft began in 1977 as a way to accommodate players who weren’t eligible for the upcoming college football season. That year, Notre Dame RB Al Hunter flunked out of school after the NFL draft but before his senior season in college. Because Hunter wouldn’t have been eligible to transfer, the supplemental draft was created. The Seattle Seahawks landed Hunter with a fourth-round bid.

Hear is our latest SEC Basketball Rankings. Things are starting to sort themselves out in the conference.

1. LSU: With wins over SC, Tenn and Miss St. twice along with the bottom of the conference LSU is showing they belong at the top. With 2 tough games left with Auburn and 1 with Tenn and UK they can cement there position with wins.

2. South Carolina: Sitting tied with UK and Tenn. in the east makes SC one of the three number 2 teams in the league.

3. Kentucky: Again tied with SC and Tenn. but with a spanking of Tenn. and a drubbing of Fla. on their record the Cats are number 3.

4. Tennessee: Starting to look like they were ranked earlier but still at 4.

5. Florida: Loosing 3 out of 4 drops the Gators to 5th and just when they were starting to get some media love.

6. Miss St: Loosing 2 in a row sends them down to 6th.

7. Auburn: Easily ahead of the bottom of the SEC and 2 games left with LSU to move up.

8. Vanderbilt: Interchangeble with Mississippi and Alabama but have games left with UK, LSU, Fla. and SC is going to make it hard for them to keep their ranking.

9. Mississippi: Near the cellar but stand a good chance of winning 3 of the next 6.

10: Alabama: Their next 2 games are Fla, and Miss St. Win those 2 and they stand a chance of moving up.

11: Arkansas: Been a up and down season for the Hogs but not at the bottom of the pile yet.

12. Georgia: A win over Fla. doesnt get them out of the cellar.

Other than moving Georgia to the top our SEC ranking dont show much in the way of change. We should get a clearer picture of who the bottom dwellers in the SEC are after the Georgia-South Carolina and Auburn-Mississippi St games.

1. Georgia — Ok now the Dawgs start getting to the meat of their schedule rather than chewing on bones thrown to them. South Carolinas defense should prove more of a challenge to the Dawgs but their offense will kill SC. Its hard not to rank them at the top of the SEC right now.

2. Florida — Miami made the Gators look beatable. Tim Tebow kept them in the game with his running but the offense didnt look all that great. The Gators defense is looking much better than they did last year.

3. LSU — They didnt play Saturday but the Tigers are still better than the rest of the SEC.

4. Auburn — The Tigers look like they are gelling at the quarterback position and learning the offense. Playing a suddenly bad looking Mississippi St. team even at the Bulldogs home shouldnt be a problem for the Tigers.

5. Alabama — Alabama looked like they decided to take a nap against Tulane. Nap this week against Western Kentucky and people will begin to wonder if their first win wasnt a fluke.

6. Vanderbilt — Ranking Vandy this high might be a stretch but they are in the 6 to 8 range.

7. Kentucky — Their defense is the real deal, having given up only three points in the first two games. Randall Cobb made the offense look much better and baring a loss to a capable Middle Tennessee team and the Cats should be 4-0 going into the Alabama game.

8. Ole Miss — Even though the Rebels lost they are still a good team and if their defense can manage to improve they will be a team to recon with in the SEC west. Their offense looks solid and will continue to improve.

9. Tennessee — Im moving the Vols up only because South Carolina looked so bad against Vandy. They could easily be 2-4 to start the season.

10. Miss. State — The Bulldogs won against won easily against Southeastern Louisiana but are going to have to do better if they want to move up next week.

11. South Carolina — Is there a offence for the gamecocks. The game this weekend is either a make or brake game for the Gamecocks. If the coaching staff cant manage to get them to rise to the occasion against the Dawgs.

12. Arkansas — 2-0 to start the season and ranked last. Texas will be the first to show how weak the Hogs really are.

After Mondays Tennessee game we will have seen all the SEC teams play. Some early observations about the league. LSU, Florida, Alabama and Georgia a will all contend for the league championship with Auburn a half step behind them. Mississippi is rising and Arkansas, and S Carolina are falling. Vanderbilt seems to be the same as last year. Mississippi St has hit rock bottom if their first game is any indication of how they are going to play. Tennessee and Kentucky will give us a better guage of how strong the league will be. Right now the 5 – 9 slots in bowl bids are up for grabs.
